  "Woman Found Dead in Chair--Mrs. Mabel W. Cady 80 a resident of 4380 Auburn Rd NE for 66 years, was found dead Thursday noon in a rocking chair in her front room.
  She apparently died sometime Wednesday of natural causes the coroner's office said.  Neighbors who hadn't seen her for several days called Marion County sheriff's office.
  Mrs. Cady was born Dec. 22, 1878.  Survivors include a foster son, Norris Merrill of Portland and a cousin in Yakima, Wash.

  "P.A. Campbell, 55, Accident Victim, Dies--Perry Andrews Campbell, 55, of 632 N. Liberty st., died in a Salem hospital Saturday morning from injuries suffered Thursday when struck by a boom on a construction job in East Salem.
  Funeral services will be held from the W.T. Rigdon chapel Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
  Campbell sustained fractures of the arm and shoulder and internal injuries Thursday afternoon while working with a Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company crew on a bridge near the state penitentiary on State street.  The crew was lifting a large pontoon from the stream when a cable parted, dropping the boom on Campbell.
  A resident of Salem for the past two years, Campbell was born in Alton, Mo., July 24, 1892, and had resided in Washington before moving to Oregon.
  Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lola Campbell of Salem; four children, Mrs. Harry Harris, Ralph Campbell and Glenn Campbell, all of Longview, Wash., and Raymond Campbell of Salem, his father, Ralph Campbell of Longview; two brothers, W.D.   "Mrs. Mahala Carey Dies After Lingering Illness--Following a lingering illness, Mrs. Mahala arey died last night at 7:30 o'clock at her home on Union street.  Mrs. Carey crossed the plains to Oregon with her parents when she was 8 years old.  The pioneer woman was born at Lone Jack, Mo., December 11, 1845.  She married at an early age and had seven children, five of whom are living.  She was a church member since the age of 14.  The funeral will probably be held from First Methodist church, although the arrangements have not yet been made.
  The surviving children are Monroe and Frank Switzer of Cloverdale, Or.; Mrs. Alice Moon, Ceres, Calif.; Mrs. Mae Wooden, Salem, and Mrs. Winnie Morrison of Mabel, Or.  She was married to Barney I. Carey in 1905.  The body is at the Rigdon chapel." OS Feb 21, 1918 2:2

  "Death Takes Former Solon, State Official--John H. Carkin, 87, of 585 Winter St. NE, died Sunday in a local nursing home.
  Born in Bangor, Me., he moved to a farm near Hillsboro, N.D.  He attended the University of Minnesota, graduated from Minnesota School of Business and earned his L.L.B. from the University of North Dakota law school in 1908.
  He was admitted to the Oregon bar in 1909, was in the private practice of law for over 20 years, served as City Attorney of Medford from 1921-1929, State Representative from 1913-1929, and Speaker of the House in 1927.  He was a member and chairman of the State Tax commission from 1929-1939.  Appointed by Gov. Charles A. Sprague, he served 15 years as director and counsel in the rail transportation department of the public utilities commissioner's office.  He was chairman of the Salem Planning Commission in the 1950s, was president of First Federal Savings and Loan Assn., and chairman of Marion County Republican Central Committee.
  Surviving are widow Vida May, Salem; daughter Mrs. Jean Sanesi, Los Angeles; sons, Earle T., Chicago, Bruce W., Mt. Vernon, Ill., Vernon E., San Antonio, Tex., J. Warren, Salem; sister Mrs. Theone Taylor, Medford; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

  The deceased had been ill about five weeks.  Her husband passed away in October, 1884, at the family home one mile east of the penitentiary.
  Five daughters remain to mourn her death viz:  Mrs. Jennie Downing, of Whiteaker; Mrs. Lizzie Witzell and Miss Susie Carpenter of Salem, and Mrs. S.C. Baird, of Osceola, Iowa, and Mrs. Culie Leeper, of Maitland, Mo.

  "Team Runaway Injures Man--N.N. Carpenter, 67, was critically hurt and is  at the Deaconess hospital Wednesday night after a team reportedly ran away with him in the morning at his home on Salem route three, south of Roberts Station.  He was treated by the first aid crew.
  Carpenter's head was slashed from near one eye to behind the ear, but the attending physician said he would probably not lose the eye.  Carpenter said he did not know just what hit him to cause the injury.

  He was born in El Salvador and moved to Houston, Texas, in 1985. He moved from Los Angeles to Salem in 1993. He worked in canneries in the Salem area. He enjoyed gardening and was a member of Light of the World Church in Canby.

  "Susan Elizabeth Henson was born near Bedford, Indiana, January 21, 1845, and died January 23, 1924, at her home in Lebanon, aged 79 years and two days.
  She moved with her parents in 1861 to Clay county, Illinois.  September 11, 1867, she was married to Ezra Cather.  To this union two sons were born, one of whom survived her, but passed away on the way to his mother's funeral.  She leaves an aged husband to mourn her loss.
  Mr. and Mrs. Cather moved to Salem in 1879, where they resided until after the death of their oldest son, William, in 1883, after which they moved to Linn county, where they have since resided in or near Lebanon.
  Mrs. Cather united with the Christian church in her early girlhood days.  She had been a member of the Eastern Star for many years.
  For the past four years she has been a patient but intense sufferer, having been paralyzed all of that time, and death found her ready and waiting.  Besides her husband she leaves the following brothers and sisters: Frank Henson of Silverton; John Henson of Burley, Idaho; Mrs. Anna Junkin, Lebanon; Mrs. Addie Gilbreath, Kingman, Kan.; Mrs. M. Surtees, Wichita, Kan.; and four grandchildren, Marcy, Alice, Ray and Frances Cather.

  "Makeshift memorial arises for two who died after being hit by SUV--S.......tudents and staffers at Winema High School on Friday remembered two classmates who were struck and killed along Lancaster Drive and prayed for a third who remained in critical condition Friday at Salem Hospital.  The crash occurred shortly after school Thursday when a sport utility vehicle jumped the curb and struck the students near Lancaster Drive and Winema Place NE.  Brittney Green, 18, and Francisco Cervantes, 16, died of their injuries. Jorge Echeverria, 18, was in critical condition Friday at Salem Hospital, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office. Friends and family placed roses, teddy bears and candles at a makeshift memorial near the scene that read: We love you! Francisco, Jorge and Brittney.
  The three students were new to the school — Francisco came from North Salem High School, Jorge from McKay High School and Brittney from Estacada, but already they were a part of the tight-knit community of 150 students. "I had a class with Francisco," said classmate Briana Davidson.  "He was funny. When he did talk, people would laugh. You knew he had a lot to say........." [Statesman Journal, Sept 25, 2010]

“When we spent the night (at a teammate’s) house, we would wrestle,” said a smiling Chris Musser, now a junior at North Salem High School and whose father coached the team.
Chris’s mom, Selma Musser, recalled Francisco as “good kid” and a competitor with a strong foot.
“Everybody knew it when he kicked the ball,” she said.

  "Aged Physician Passes Beyond--Dr. Elmer Y. Chase Dies at Salem Home Sunday at Age 86 Years--Dr. Elmer Y. Chase, 86-year old, died at his residence in Salem, 265 North Commercial street, Sunday.  The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock from the funeral chapel of Webb & Clough, with interment at Lee Mission cemetery.
  Elmore Y. Chase, eldest son of Katherine Rosencrantz and Rev. E.B. Chase of the Methodist church, was born in Delmare county, Ohio, March 6, 1831.  At the age of 16 years after a short term in the Ohio Wesleyan university, he entered the office of Dr. Z.C. McElroy in Zanesville, Ohio, as a student of medicine.  After eight years' work and study, two of which was spent in a drug store, he graduated from Miamie Medical College, Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1854.  Settling in Galena, Ohio, was married to Miss Jennette Huntley, moved to Zanesville, Ohio, and at the beginning of the Civil War entered the army as assistant surgeon, Thirteenth Ohio regiment volunteers, serving a year in the field, was then put in charge of hospital No. 8 in Nashville, Tenn., and made a staff surgeon.  He was ordered to Washington and after several months service, his health failing, was sent to Vancouver, Wash.  During service on Pacific coast he was stationed at various posts in Oregon and Washington and promoted to rank of major.  Finally he was ordered home, after repeated requests for more active service, reaching New York just as peace was declared.  He was sent to serve where a new post was building at Fort Decota, at Sioux Falls, in May, 1886.  He was ordered out and honorably discharged with rank of lieutenant colonel brevet; took service as acting assistant surgeon United States of America and was sent to San Juan, Texas.  Later he was sent to Vancouver; still later sent to Fort Colville where he also served as Indian agent.  In the fall of 1869 he resigned from the service and located in Salem, entering into partnership with Dr. Carpenter, from that time has lived in Salem.
  For a time he was professor of toxicology in Willamette university; was honorary member of Muskingum county, Ohio, medical society; also the Marion County Medical society.  After a long and varied career as physician and surgeon retired from practice several years ago.  Some years after locating in Salem his wife died.  In 1879 he was married to Mrs. Belinda G. Hileman, Vancouver, Wash., who with a son, Zenas M., now serving in the medical department Thirteenth Infantry U.S.A., two step children, Mrs. C.D. Purvine and J.B. Hileman, surviving."   She worked for Castle and Cook Cannery for 21 years and belonged to the Teamsters Local No. 670 and the Salem Latin Assembly of God Church.  She was enrolled in senior citizen's Spanish courses at Chemeketa Community College at various times over 18 years.
  She wrote her life story, The Broken Twig, and it's supplement, The Broken Twig Lives.  She also wrote three other books and over 500 poems, some of which were published in Christian magazines.  She belonged to the Salem Writers Association and enjoyed flower gardening and home canning.
  In 1942 she married Richard E. Cleveland; he died in 1969.
  Survivors include her foster daughter, Beverly T. Johnson of Salem; and brother, Clarence Alexander of Salem.

Clough, pioneer mortician and resident of Salem for the past 56 years, who died at his home at 850 North Church street Wednesday, will be held from the Clough-Barrick funeral parlors Saturday, April 30, at 2:30 with Rev. Kantner officiating.  Music will be furnished by the Clough-Barrick quartet.  Graveside services will be held by the Odd Fellows lodge with interment in the Lee Mission cemetery.
  Mr. Clough was born September 4, 1850 in St. Johnsbury, Vt.  He came to Salem in May, 1876, after receiving his education in the public school of Iowa and the academy at Waukon, Iowa.  He has been a resident here ever since, and has been in the mortuary business during virtually all of that time.  In point of years of services he was the senior mortician of the entire state.  For the past few years he has been affiliated with the Clough-Barrick company, and before that time was connected with F.J. Babcock and later with U.J. Lehman.
  Clough was a member of both the Odd Fellows lodge and Woodmen of the World.  Starting in 1888 he served in the capacity of Marion county coroner for 26 1/2 years.
  Surviving him are his widow, Adella; three daughters, Mrs. Harley Pugh of Salem, Mrs. W.R. Bishop of San Francisco and Mrs. W.L. Bryant of Portland; two grandchildren, Howard Pugh of Salem, and Arthur Bishop of San Francisco; two brothers, William of Des Moines, Iowa and Fernando of Elk Falls, Kansas.

  "Jose Ignacio Contreras, 22, died instantly in a car accident February 28, 2021. He was born January 8, 1999 in Silverton, Oregon, the son of Mallisa Sanchez and Marcos Rodriguez.
Jose spent his elementary school years in Salem, Oregon. He spent his middle school and high school years in Warrenton, Oregon. He later moved back to Salem where he met Yahaira Vallejo with whom he had 2 beautiful daughters. He was a hard worker who prided himself in being “the best.” One of his early jobs was at Marcos’ place, in which he had a good relationship with the owner and his fellow co-workers, not to mention he loved the food. He later worked as a Sawyer at Oregon Truss, developing many friendships with his co-workers, and finally as a Valet for Towne Park. He loved sports, especially basketball and played on community teams. His favorite basketball player was Chris Paul and his favorite team was the LA Clippers.
Jose was a loving son, brother and father. Jose had a fun-loving, easy going personality and enjoyed making people laugh. He knew no stranger.

"Mrs. Bertha Cook Buried; Clatskanie Pastor's Wife Laid to Rest in Salem--  Funeral services were held yesterday at the chapel of Bruning & Driscoll, Third and Clay streets, for Mrs. Bertha Cook, wife of Rev. Claude T. Cook of Clatskanie.  Rev. Walton Skipworth officiated at the service with the assistance of Rev. L. B. Mitzner.
  Burial was made in the historic Jason Lee cemetery at Salem, at the request of Mrs. Cook, who was a devoted worker in the Methodist Episcopal church, assisting her husband in his ministry.  Several early Methodist Episcopal missionaries are buried in Jason Lee cemetery and several ministers and their wives recently have requested burial there.

  "Dr. J.F. Cook Expires After Short Illness--Well Known Salem Physician Dies As Result of Blood Poison--Dr. J.F. Cook, a well-known physician of this city, died this morning at 1 o'clock, at his residence, 340 Liberty street, after a week's illness from blood poison.  He was 63 years of age, and had been a resident of Salem for the past eleven years.  His former place of residence was Omaha, Nebraska.  He was a member of the German Baptist church of Salem, and leaves many friends in this city.
  His wife survives him, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Hatch of Hastings, Minnesota, besides a niece, Miss Hattie Cook, who for the past five years has been a member of his household.
  His gradual failure of health dates back several months, when he injured his head by a fall.

  "Margaret Cook Is Honored Saturday--Woodburn, Ore., Dec. 15--(Special)--Mrs. Margaret Cook, 74, passed away at her home on East Lincoln street shortly before noon Wednesday after a short illness.
  Margaret McCloude was born September 19, 1854 in Ontario, Canada, and at the age of 12 moved to Iowa.  In November 1876 she was married to Luther Cook who died in 1904.  In 1908 she married Cyrus Cook, brother of her first husband, and moved to Salem, Oregon in the same year.
  They lived in Salem several years and then moved to a farm near Gervais.  She had spent the last three years in Woodburn.
  Surviving her are three brothers: David McCloude, of California; George McCloude of Sioux City, Iowa and Andrew McCloude of Plymouth, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Byington and Mrs. Anna Ridgeway, of Plymouth, Iowa; three sons, Norman W. Cook, Gervais, Harry Cook, Jerome, Iowa, and Luther D. Cook, Salem; and two daughters, Mrs. Grace Dietzman and Mrs. Gertrude Belcher.  She is also survived by her husband, 12 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

  "Cooley Killed At Fossil, Or.--Former Marion Man Is Victim of Accidental Discharge of Gun--Salem relatives received the announcement yesterday of the death of Herschel Cooley, who was accidentally shot Tuesday at his home near Fossil, Or.  He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Cooley of this city and was 40 years old.  The details of the shooting have not yet been ascertained.
  Mr. Cooley and his family were former residents of Marion, this county, and moved from there to Fossil just six weeks ago, where Mr. Cooley had an 1100-acre ranch.  The body arrived in Salem last night at 10 o'clock and is in the care of Webb & Clough.  The funeral will be held this afternoon with burial in Lee Mission cemetery.  Rev. F.T. Porter will conduct the services.

Simpson, near Turner.  Mrs. Cooley survives her husband.
  Sons and daughters surviving are Ralph Cooley, manager of Bishop's clothing store; E.W. Cooley, grocery store proprietor; and Ellis Cooley, Salem clothier; Mrs. D.B. Simpson of Turner; Mrs. L.J. Bowman of Peshtigo, Wis.; and H.W. Cooley of Freewater, Ore.  Twenty grandchildren and six great grandchildren are also left.
  Rev. D.J. Howe, pastor of the First Christian church, officiated at the services Monday afternoon and interment took place in Lee Mission cemetery at the side of his son, Herschel.  Deceased was a member of the First Christian church.
  Mr. Cooley was ill less than a week with a severe heart affliction.  Several years ago and again last spring, he suffered attacks but had apparently recovered from them.

  "Cornell-Emily B. Cornell was born in Crittenden county, Vermont, August 11, 1820, and when but nine years of age moved with her parents to Ohio.  In 1838 she was united in marriage to William Cornell, who is now made to feel, in his old age, the loss of an helpmeet who for nearly fifty years bravely stood by him through a two-fold pioneer life.  In 1854 she removed to Oregon, coming by way of the Isthmus; her husband having crossed the plains two years previously.  She was converted and united with the Baptist Church at the early age of fourteen years, but subsequently united with the M.E. Church, remaining a faithful member until death set her free.  About two years ago consumption took hold upon her and it became evident to her friends that her days were nearly numbered. A few days previous to her death, feeling a little better, she decided to visit her children, some of whom lived in Portland.  It was thought that possibly the change would prove beneficial to her health, but such hopes were vain, for, while visiting at the residence of her youngest son, H.A. Cornell, death claimed her.  When told by the physician in attendance that the hour had come, she expressed no alarm, no words of regret, but with fortitude, begotten of faith, said: "It is the Lord, and let him do what seemeth him good."  A short time prior to her death, she repeated to her daughter these lines: `When all thy mercies, O my God, My rising soul surveys, Transported with the view, I'm lost In wonder, love and praise'.  She died in great peace April 10th and was interred in Lee cemetery, where so many of God's heroes lie awaiting the resurrection morn.  Her bereaved husband and six children have the sympathies of a large number of Christian friends."  PCA May 10, 1888

  Born in Betteravia, Calif., Corwin moved to Salem with his wife, Juliet, in 1970, when he retired after serving 12 years as school superintendent in Winston-Dillard, near Roseburg.  He also had been superintendent in the Oregon cities of Colton, Boardman, Heppner, Monmouth-Independence and Hood River.
  In 1976, Corwin received the first Willard C. Marshall award, presented to the Citizen Volunteer of the Year.
  The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce honored him with its Distiguished Service Award.
  Corwin's community service included being past president of Salem Area Seniors, past director of Volunteers for Nursing Homes, past president of the former Volunteer Bureau, coordinator of what is now United Seniors, and memberships on the Salem city budget committee and a tri-county senior services advisory committee.  He promoted tax levies for the Salem transit system.
  Survivors include his wife, Juliet F.; sons James, of Albany, and Stephen, of San Jose, Calif.; and daughters Joan C. LaFreniere, of Salem, and Claire Durland, of Portland.

  "Alfred Cowan Dies By His Own Hand At Camp Near Here--Refusal of Wife to Live With Him Causes Suicide--Pistol Shot Arouses Brother and Friend From Bed Soon After Reaching Minto Farm Early Last Night--Officials Make Inquiry--Refusal of his wife to live with him caused Alfred Cowan, 23 years old, to take his own life by shooting himself in the heart with a .32 calibre automatic pistol about 8:30 o'clock last night at a camping place on the Frank Minto farm five miles south of Salem.
  Cowan's widow, Mrs. Beatrice Cowan, is now at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Shell Hayes, at Trail, Ore., near Medford.  He is also survived by an infant daughter, June, 2 years old, and by his mother, Mrs. Minnie Cowan, of San Francisco.
  Cowan was traveling through the state by automobile with his brother, Ira Cowan, 17, and with Thomas Martin, a friend.  They recently left Sloat, Calif., according to Martin's story, told last night to District Attorney John H. Carson and Sheriff O.D. Bower.  They reached Medford Sunday, and Cowan drove to the Hayes place to see his wife, hoping for a reconciliation.  When he returned, however, he told his brother and Mr. Martin that he had been unsuccessful.  He appeared to brood over his trouble Sunday, but yesterday, Martin said, was more cheerful.  However, he had threatened to kill himself. The three men reached the Minto camp about 8 o'clock last night.  Ira Cowan and Martin had gone to bed, while Alfred Cowan busied himself about the car.  Suddenly the two former were aroused by a shot.  Apparently, Cowan died almost instantly, but he was rushed to a hospital in Salem in an automobile driven by Mrs. Frank Minto.

  "Death Takes Mrs. Curry--Mrs. Emma Ursula Curry, 3452 Abrams Ave. NE, died Saturday night at her home at the age of 85.  She had been an invalid for several years.
  Mrs. Curry had been a Salem resident for 13 years.  She was the widow of Samuel Curry, retired Arkansas farmer who died last year.  They were married April 12, 1892, at Witter, Ark.
  She was born April 21, 1873, in Montgomery County, Kan.  She was a member of the Baptist Church.
  She leaves four daughters, Mrs. Elma Cooper and Mrs. Lillian Williams, both of Salem, and Mrs. Marie Pearson and Mrs. Roxie Pearson, both of Toledo; one son, Lester Curry, Salem; one sister, Mrs. Fred Evell, Lincoln, Ark.; 13 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
