Burial Listing for surnames beginning with - P -

1) A single rose beside a burial listing indicates an unmarked grave.  If you find that your family member is unmarked and you wish to place a marker, please contact the Lee Mission Cemetery Board to discuss your options and to notify them of your intent.
2) A box with an "R" in it preceding a burial listing indicates a reserved plot
3) The number to the right of the death date is the burial plot number and can be used in the plot search option  to find out who is buried in adjoining plots.  An N/A in the plot location indicates that although the individual is known to have been buried in the cemetery, the exact location is not known at this time.   All additions and corrections are appreciated and can be sent to stephenie@leemissioncemetery.com.

one of the reinforcement of the Oregon mission of the M. E. Church.  Founder of the Orphan Home in Salem
"Dies, in Salem, Marion county, Oregon, Aug. 30th, 1869, of lingering illness, Mrs. Elizabeth Parrish, late consort of Rev. J.L. Parrish, of the Oregon Annual Conference, aged 58 years 5 months and 13 days.
Maiden name, Elizabeth Winn.  Born in Montgomery county, New York, March 17th, 1811.  Brought up principally in the city of Rochester, New York.  United with the M.E. Church in 1830.  Married to Mr. Parrish Sept. 26th, 1833.  Set sail from New York harbor in the ship Lausanne, for Oregon, in company with her husband, three child-ren, and a number of other families, October 9th, 1839.  Arrived in Oregon, May 1840, via Cape Horn and the Sand-wich Islands.  Here with her family she has since lived, except a few months visit to her friends in the east.  In Oregon, Mrs. Parrish has with others, endured the hardships and perils incident to this then, far off, barbarous, and almost unknown land; many a pioneer has shared the hospitalities of her and her husband's house, while her hands have ministered to their necessities; these on hearing of her death, will drop a tear over the memory of past scenes.
As a woman, Mrs. Parrish possessed a strong mind and commanding mien; a sound discriminating judgment, and a kind heart. `She opened her mouth in wisdom, and on her tongue was the law of kindness.'
As a wife, Mrs. Parrish `reverenced her husband, in her, his heart could trust; she did him good, and not evil, all the days of her life, she looked well to her household, and ate not the bread of idleness.  Her adorning was modest, not that outward adorning of plaiting the hair and wearing of gold, or putting on extravagant and gaudy apparel; but the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptable, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God, of great price.'
As a mother, few children, if any, ever had a better than her's `They will arise up and call her blessed,' and long will they cherish the memory of her motherly affection, and the words of wisdom and kindness which fell from her lips.
As a friend, she was true and could be implicitly confided in; as a neighbor, always obliging; as a Christian, Sister Parrish's religious experience was comforting and clear, and yet her piety shone more in example and deeds, than words; every where, by land and by sea, she adorned her Christian profession; in all places, that same consistant Christian woman.  To the sick within her reach, she was ever ready to administer comfort and aid.  She clothed the naked, and fed the hungry.  She blessed the orphan and wiped his tears.  She sympathized with suffering humanity, and relieved it.  She rejoiced with those who rejoiced, and wept with those that wept.  She was the President of the `Ladies Christian Commission Society' of Salem, and among others gave of her means to relieve the wounded and suffering soldiers.  A true Christian patriot.  She was also President of the `Children's Aid Society,' and did much to promote its interests.  In her last sickness, Sister Parrish suffered as a Christian, patiently trusting in God to the last, and was sustained.  She talked freely of her passage to the heavenly state; just on the brink of the `stream' she said, `It is but a step over, just a step, and those on the other shore are awaiting to wel-come me.  I have no particular one in view, but they are there, thousands of them.'
Those who stood by will not soon forget that heaven beaming counten-ance; her death was triumphant.  Just as she breathed her last, she raised her hands and eyes, as evidently a brighter scene broke on her enraptured vision, and exclaimed, `Father Leslie! Father Leslie!' and was gone.  Was that glorified patriarch allowed, with other shining ones, to escourt her home?  What a privilege, `to see a pilgrim as he dies; with glory in his view!'  With Sister Parrish, as with others before the Throne:
`The voyage of lifes at an end,
   The mortal afflicition is past;
   The age that in heaven they spend;
   Forever, and ever, shall last.'
May God abundantly bless and comfort the bereaved husband and children; and may they all, at last, come to the home of the blessed.'"  PCA Sep 11, 1869 2:5

"Miss Nina Winn Parrish died at her house here, 455 North Summer street, yesterday.  She was born in Salem April 5, 1870 and had spent her entire life here.  She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Hallie Parrish Hinges of Salem and Mrs. E.M. Cox of Seattle.
At the time of her death Miss Parrish was and for many years had been the proprietress of a high class boarding house.
Funeral services will be held from the chapel of the Clough-Barrick company mortuary, Thursday, April 6 at 2 p.m. with Rev. W.C. Kantner and Rev. F.A. Weil officiating.  Interment will follow in the family plot at the Lee Mission cemetery.
Miss Parrish was only a few days ago, while apparently in her usual health, the victim of a paralytic stroke, from which she did not rally.  Some of her friends who had been her patrons went yesterday to a florist's to secure flowers for presentation on her 63d birthday, and were surprised to be told their intended recipient had passed to her long home--missing by only a day the anniversary.
Her father was Norman Parrish, a resident of the capital city from his early youth, who passed on a number of years ago.  He was the son, and thus the deceased a granddaughter, of Rev. J.L. Parrish, who came as a member of the famous Lausanne party of mission-aries arriving in 1840, with his wife and three children.  He held several mission stations, having supervision of work among the Indians, to whom he was known as "the man of peace."  He was successful in his mission and other work, held the northeast mile square donation claim of the four that make up the site of Salem.  He and his wife gave the land on which was built the Glen Oak orphans' home, now one of the buildings of the state hospital; and Lee Mission cemetery is on a part of that claim. The Parrish junior high school was named for him--standing on part of the original Parrish claim.  Rev. J.L. Parrish was at the primary meetings leading to the provisional government, upon which the state of Oregon was founded.  His name is on the Champoeg Park monument.  In all pioneering movements, from 1840 on, he was a prominent figure." Connie was a colorful person that always had something funny to say in her own unique vocabulary! Anyone who knew Connie knows what I am talking about! She had a laugh like no other and a love for her family and friends that stretched far and wide. She would do anything to help someone out even if it meant giving them her last penny! That was just who she was! She absolutely LOVED her grand kids and great grand kids. They brought her so much joy when they came over to visit. We are all going to miss her terribly but will rejoice in knowing where she is at now and knowing that her pain is gone forever! I look forward to the day when we will see each other again! But for now you will have to have someone else get your coffee for you momma! I love you mom!

"Mrs. Rosa Penn Dies Yesterday--Woman of Heroic Character Passes Away After Long and Eventful Life--After a singularly eventful life of 85 years, Mrs. Rosa Penn passes away at 10 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of her son, James T. Penn, 500 North Capitol street.
Born in Indiana and later a resident of Arkansas and Oklahoma, Mrs. Penn's life history was full of deeds of bravery, heroism and sacrifice more than commonly falls to the lot of women.  Living in an age before modern machinery simplified living, Mrs. Penn picked cotton, which she spun and wove into garments, and cared for the ten children born to her.
It is told of her that on one occasion when living in Arkansas during the war the supply of salt gave out, and the family suffered much because of the lack of it, Mrs. Penn rode on horseback a distance of 150 miles, securing a peck of the coveted article and was within a half mile of home when set upon by `bushwackers' and robbed of it, but her pathetic appeal to them caused the return of a small portion of it.
At another time a neighbor's husband had been killed by marauding `bushwackers,' and every able-bodied man having been pressed into war service, Mrs. Penn dug the grave for the man and made for him the box that served as a casket.
Her strength of character, courage and indomitable will remained with her throughout her life, and she retained her faculties to the very last.
Her declining years were full of suffering, which she bore bravely and patiently.  Her illness was due to cancer, and she suffered the amputa-tion of one arm to stay the ravages of the disease.  Twice was her hip broken by falls, the last time being in September, an injury from which she never recovered.
She is survived by the following  children, her husband having preceded her to the grave about seven years ago; Mrs. Murphy of Harrison, Ark.; Mrs. Willson, Shawnee, Okla.; John H. and A.L. Penn of Oklahoma; George of Washington; Mrs. Miller of Harlan, Or., and J.T. Penn of this city.
The funeral will take place from the parlors of Rigdon & Lehman at 3 o'clock today, Rev. W.H. Selleck officiating. Interment will be made in Lee Mission cemetery." DOS Nov 7, 1909 6:3

Gibson Friday afternoon, in a very bad condi-tion, and was later taken to the police' station by that officer, where he was made as comfortable as possible.  Yesterday morning, however, his condition grew worse and he became suddenly convulsed in spasms and fits, of which nothing seemed to relieve him.  He tore his clothing from his body, and fell on the cement floor a number of times, striking his face and head and his death, which came at 10:30 o'clock, is supposed to have been caused by these severe falls.
Coroner D.F. Lane was called and upon making a thorough examination of the circumstances decided that it was not necessary to hold an inquest and the remains were taken to Rigdon & Clough's undertaking parlors, where they were prepared for burial.
Doug. Pickett, as he is more famili-arly known, was a one time Salem boy and of highly respectable family, but through mingling in bad company and contracting those destructive drug habits he went from bad to worse until the end came, which in his case, was a godsend.  Funeral services will be held in Rigdon & Clough's undertaking parlors today, and the burial will take place at the Lee Mission ceme-tery."  OS Oct 27, 1901 8:3

POINDEXTER, David Oldham
b. 30 Jan 1929 Hood River, Oregon
d. 08 Feb 2018 Portland, Oregon
RC-12-11
"David Oldham Poindexter, a Methodist minister who championed the use of radio and television serial dramas to promote family planning, gender equity, and protection of the environment, died February 8 at a hospital in Portland, Oregon. He died from the effects of a stroke. Poindexter, who also organized several non-governmental organization (NGO) forums at major UN conferences, was born in Hood River, Oregon on January 30, 1929.
After receiving a Bachelor’s of Art at Willamette University in 1951 and both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Theology at Boston University (where he became friends with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.), David served as pastor of Parkrose Heights Methodist Church in Portland for eight years. He then moved to New York City to work with the National Council of Churches for five years as Director of Utilization of the NCC’s Broadcasting and Film Commission and then Director of Promotion Services, during which he established close ties with the Hollywood community.
At the request of his bishop, David became Director of the Communication Center of the Population Institute from 1970 to 1985. In the early1970s, he collaborated with John D. Rockefeller III to hold a meeting of the three network CEOs – a meeting also attended by then UN ambassador George H.W. Bush and Senator Robert Packwood – to discuss treatment of gender, reproductive health and family planning issues in television. He convinced the CEOs of the three major networks to host a large gathering in New York of key network entertainment producers and writers. Following that event, he organized annual awards ceremonies in collaboration with the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to recognize the best entertainment shows addressing those issues.
One of the outgrowths of Poindexter’s outreach to Hollywood leaders was a long-standing relationship with Norman Lear and his head of drama, Virginia Carter. At Poindexter’s suggestion, the character Maude, in the series by the same name, had a mid-life abortion – six months before the Roe vs. Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. As Norman Lear later put it, “David got Maude pregnant.” Similarly, he suggested the vasectomy of Rob Reiner’s character, Michael, on All in the Family. During his work in Hollywood, Poindexter worked closely with Mary Tyler Moore, who was a great supporter of his work, which helped to bring about the discussion of sexism in the workplace on the Mary Tyler Moore Show.
In the mid-1970s, Poindexter began working in Mexico, where he discovered and promoted the work of Miguel Sabido, a well-known Mexican playwright and television producer who became a pioneer in entertainment-education. As Vice President of Televisa, Sabido produced six telenovelas in the late 1970s and early 1980s, modeling family planning use for Mexican audiences. During that time, Mexico experienced the most rapid decline in fertility rate of any developing country in the 20th century up until that time. These programs had similar effects when they were broadcast in several in Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America. Thomas Donnelly, then with USAID in Mexico, wrote, “The Televisa family planning soap operas have made the single most powerful contribution to the Mexican population success story.”
In the early 1980s, Poindexter took Sabido to meet with Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and following a training program they organized for Doordarshan (Indian Television), the country began broadcasting India’s first social content soap opera, Hum Log (“We People”) in July 1984. The program included promotion of family planning and elevation of the status of women through the words and actions of key characters. Research conducted by the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism of the University of Southern California, found dramatic impacts on audience attitudes about women’s rights and ideal family size. The program spurred over 400,000 people to write letters to the Indian Television Authority.
In 1986, Poindexter, with commercial sponsorship from India’s largest industrial conglomerate, helped to organize a second serial drama, which aired in January 1992. Produced by Roger Pereira, Humraahi (“Come Along With Me”) dealt with child marriage, age of first pregnancy, gender bias in childbearing and child rearing, equal educational opportunity, and the right of women to choose their own husbands. A Rockefeller Foundation-funded study showed that viewers, contrasted with non-viewers, changed significantly in their attitudes regarding the ideal age of marriage and the acceptability of women in the work place.
At the Population Institute, and later as founder and President of Population Communications International (1985-1998), Poindexter worked to bring about similar programs in numerous countries, including Brazil, China, Kenya, Madagascar, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, St. Lucia, and Tanzania.
Following retirement in 1998, Poindexter served as Honorary Chair of Population Media Center, where he helped establish new programs in Ethiopia and Nigeria. He continued in this role until his death, during which time Population Media Center implemented social change serial dramas in 54 countries.
Poindexter chaired the U.S. NGO Committee for the UN Population Conference in 1974, held in Bucharest, Romania. He also served as Convener of the NGO Planning Committee for the 1984 Population Conference, held in Mexico City and as Convener of the NGO Planning Committee for the 1994 UN Conference on Population and Development, held in Cairo. The 1994 NGO Forum became the largest NGO forum in UN history.
For over a decade, he was an officer of the Committee on Sustainable Development of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Status with the UN’s Economic and Social Division. He also served on the Executive Committee of the Conference of UN Representatives of the Council of Organizations of the United Nations Association-USA (UNA-USA). He was an Honorary Fellow of the Population Reference Bureau, and received the Ninoy Aquino Human Rights Award, an Alumni Citation from Willamette University, the Eleanor Schnurr Award of the UNA-USA, and the Distinguished Service Award of the Population Institute. He was an Honorary Life Board Member of the Council on International Non-Theatrical Events (CINE).
Poindexter’s life and work are captured in his autobiographical book, Out of the Darkness of Centuries, published in 2009.
David is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marian Sayer Poindexter, and his son, Jim.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 13, at the First United Methodist Church, at 1838 SW Jefferson Street, Portland, Oregon 97201 at 10:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions may be made to Population Media Center, Suite 302, 30 Kimball Avenue, South Burlington, Vermont 05403.

Mrs. Price, whose maiden name was Margaret Wallace, was born in Harrison county, Indiana, February 6, 1857, being one of seven children.  On August 4, 1878, she was married to E.C.   The family moved to Hastings, Nebra-ska, in 1886; to Bentelman, Nebraska, in 1892; to Alberta, Canada, in 1900; to Woodburn, in 1903, and to Salem in June of the present year.
Mrs. Price was converted to religi-ous faith at the age of 12 years, and joined the Methodist Episcopal church of which she remained a faithful member until the time of her death, and showed her devotion to Christian-ity by active work in Sunday school and Epworth League.
The health of the deceased has always been frail, but the decline has been marked since 1903, with the exception of an interval previous to March, 1905, since which time she had been a constant, though patient sufferer.

Deceased had only been ill of the malady which proved fatal to him but eight or nine months, and the fact that it resulted in his death at such an immature age is a marvel to the local medical profession who state that it is rare that cancer proves fatal within the age of 40 years.  He was of mild and pleasant disposition and the high esteem in which he was held by his fellow university students was attested by the manner in which those who are in the city turned out to pay their last respects to their deceased friend and college mate."   "Proctor Drops Dead in Office of Physicians--A shock to the community in which he lived the greater part of the 23 years of his life and where he was known as an athlete and sportsman, was the sudden death late Tuesday afternoon of Daryl F. Proctor.  Death came as he was being examined in the offices of Dr. J.H. Garnjobst and Dr. Elgar S. Fortner in the U.S. National bank building.  A heart affliction is given as the cause.  Monday evening Proctor complained of abdominal pains and Tuesday afternoon he went to the doctor's office for an examination.  He was on the examining table for less than 10 minutes when death occurred.  Both physicians were with him at the time.
Proctor is survived by his wife, Gladys; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Proctor, who was spending the summer in Seattle; a brother, Errol Proctor, of Portland; and four sisters, Mrs. B.E. Otjen and Miss LaVerne Proctor of Salem, Mrs. Vida Compton of Redmond, Wash., and Mrs. Hugh Latham of Los Angeles.
Proctor was a leading player with the Salem Senators for a number of years and he was active in Twilight league affairs.  While a student at Salem high school he was outstanding in baseball, football and track.  He was president of the high school student body in his senior year.  After his graduation from Salem high school in 1916 he attended O.A.C. for one year where he led in freshman athletics.  He enlisted in the navy during the war and was stationed for one year in Los Angeles and for two years at the base hospital in Phila-delphia, where he was mustered out.
On his return to Salem after three years in the service, Proctor worked for a short time with the old Phez company and later at Waits packing house before he joined the Valley Motor company.  For the past seven years Proctor was manager of the parts department at the Valley Motor company.
Daryl Proctor was born in Middletown, Idaho, June 15, 1896.  His father Willard Proctor died in Salem three years ago this month and is buried in Jason Lee cemetery.  The family moved from Boise, Idaho, to Philomath, Ore., when Daryl was 10 years old.  A year later they came to Salem, their home since that time.

"Dr. Robert (Bob) L. Purbrick PhD Dec. 5, 1919 - Oct. 6, 2010 SALEM - Bob was born Dec. 5, 1919, in Salem, Oregon, to Violet (Barker) and Harold Purbrick. His parents were both born in England, but met and married in Salem. He attended public schools in Salem (Englewood, Parrish, Salem High). He graduated with a BA (physics, mathematics, chemistry) from Willamette University in 1942, MA (physics, mathematics) University of Wisconsin and a PhD (physics) University of Wisconsin. After graduating from Willamette he taught Army Air Corps meteorologists for about one year at the University of Wisconsin. When the program came to an end, he started working as a nuclear physicist at the Metallurgical Laboratory of the University of Chicago. This was the code name for the Atomic Bomb Project at Chicago. Research carried out for the Corps of Engineers, Manhattan District. He worked mainly at the Argonne Laboratory of the University of Chicago. Argonne was a small laboratory located in the Argonne Forest about 30 miles west of Chicago and was under the direction of Enrico Fermi, a Nobel Prize winner in Physics. He helped construct and operate the world's first two nuclear reactors and performed many nuclear physics experiments which were all classified "secret". In 1945 he received a "certificate of appreciation" from the Army Corps of Engineers. In 1946 after WWII he returned to the University of Wisconsin under a Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation Fellowship. In 1947 he became a Professor of Physics at Willamette University where he remained until retirement in 1985. At his retirement, former students established the Robert L. Purbrick scholarship. He published physics research articles mainly in four major physics journals (Physical Review, American Journal of Physics, Review of Scientific Instruments, Journal of Chemical Physics). The research was mainly in nuclear physics, atomic and molecular physics, electronics and analog computers. Since the research was published worldwide it resulted in communications with scientists working in physics, chemistry, cancer research and radiocarbon dating all over the world. The research was sponsored by grants from the Research Corporation, the National Science Foundation, and the Atomic Energy Commission. In the mid-1950s he and a medical doctor started the first nuclear medicine laboratory in the area. He belonged to many scientific societies (American Physical Society, American Association of Physics Teachers, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Sigma Xi, the American Geophysical Union, Optical Society of America, the Society of Nuclear Medicine and others). In August of 1953 he and Ursula Glaeser were married in the Methodist church in Corvallis where Bob was teaching at Oregon State at the time. Ursula was an exchange student from Austria and also a housemother at Willamette University. Ursula and Bob lived in south Salem for many years before entering Capital Manor in West Salem in 1999.
