"Salem - Lorinda Macomber, loving mother, grandmother,
sister, and friend passed away suddenly on Saturday Oct. 21st, 2017 at home at
the age of 61.
She was born in Salem Oregon and lived here all
of her life. Lorinda worked for over 30 years at the Oregon School for the Blind
and then at OHA for an additional 7 years until her retirement. She was enjoying
spending time with her family and friends. She excitedly worked on her "bucket
list" which included publishing a cookbook that she accomplished this year. In
addition she tackled a multitude of home improvement projects to update her
home.
Lorinda is survived by her children: Stacy Macomber and
Jeff Macomber; her grandchildren: Alyssa, Jeffery, Shayla, Dylan, and Sophie;
two sisters: Char Rowe and Sandy Gilstrap; two brothers: Allan Sunberg and Don
Payne. She is also survived by her many friends who will miss her dearly.
Lorinda left a big impact on many people with her thoughtful ways and caring
heart.
Graveside services will be on Tuesday, Oct 31st at 11:00

Succumbs--Bert Warren Macy Was Active in Civic Affairs Here--Bert
Warren Macy, 63, native of Salem, former city alderman and city
attorney and prominent in republican activities for many years, died
late Thursday at his home, 444 North 18th street.
Funeral services will be held from the Rigdon chapel at 2:30
p.m. on Saturday, December 30.
Born March 26, 1876, Mr. Macy attended the old East Salem school
now known as the Washington school and later attended Willamette
university where he was prominent as an athlete. Despite his lack
of weight he was considered an outstanding tackle on the Willamette
eleven in the '90s when the Willamette team played on even terms with
the leading Pacific coast elevens. He retained a keen interest in
sports throughout his life.
At a later period he returned to Willamette for a law course and
received his LLB degree in 1912. He practiced law in Salem from
that year with the exception of a brief period spent in
Washington state. At one time he was a law partner of the late
Glenn E. Unruh.
He was distantly related to John Adams and John Quincy Adams,
early presidents of the United States.
Serving on the city council from 1913 to 1915, Mr. Macy was
appointed city attorney in 1916 and served in that capacity until
1921. Always active in politics, he was a member of the Marion
county republican central committee continuously since 1926 and was its
secretary in 1926 and 1932.
He was formerly council commander of the Woodmen lodge and was a
member of Salem lodge No. 4, AF & AM, and of Salem lodge No. 336,
BPOE.
He was married in 1920 to Anna M. Rader-Campbell of Walla
Walla. She survives him as well as three children, Marion and
Virginia Macy of Salem and Ronald Macy of Vancouver, Wash.; two
brothers, Edwin S. Macy and J.F. Macy of Portland; and two sisters,
Mrs. Ella Morris of Los Angeles and Pearl Macy of Salem." OS Dec 29,

"Jesse Macy, Here Since 1863, Dies--Jesse Macy, 89, resident of
Salem since 1863, died suddenly following a heart attack Monday
night. He had been in good health until a few hours before his
death.
Mr. Macy 40 years ago conducted a livery stable at the present
location of the Archerd farm implement store.
He was married April 5, 1865, to Elizabeth R. Whitley.
Squire H.A. Johnson, prominent Salem pioneer, conducted the marriage
ceremony.
Seven children and five grandchildren survive. The
children are Mrs. Ella Morris, Santa Monica, Cal., Edwin S. Macy and
Pearl Macy, Portland; J. Frank, Pendleton; Albert M., Bert W. Macy and
Mrs. Ida May, Salem. The grandchildren are Isabelle, Doris and
William Macy of Pendleton, Mrs. Lillian Levy and Marian Macy of Salem.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 21, at 1:30
o'clock at the Rigdon Mortuary chapel. Interment will be in the

"Death Takes J.F. Macy--John Franklin Macy, who came to Salem by
a wagon train at the age of 6 weeks, died Saturday night in a Salem
hospital at the age of 87. He had been ill for about five years.
Macy was the son of Jesse and Elizabeth Rebecca Whitley Macy,
who had lived here before moving to Northern California where the boy
was born near Adna on April 27, 1871. The elder Macy had a farm
east of Salem.
Macy, known as Frank, was a men's furnishings salesman. He
was employed as a young man in Salem clothing stores and later in
Pendleton and Portland. He returned to Salem seven years ago.
He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Isabella Guderian, Inglewood,
Calif. and Mrs. Doris Egnew, Rolling Hills, Calif.; one brother,
William Franklin Macy, Bisbee, Ariz.; one sister, Miss Pearl Macy,
Salem; two grandchildren.

A native of Salem, she was employed for a number of years as a

She was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church here.
Survivors include a number of nephews and nieces, including
Roger Holloway of Albany.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the W.T. Rigdon chapel,

He lived in Tacoma for 37 years where he worked as an architect and interior designer.
He was an honorary member of the Fairweather Lodge 82 F&AM; past commander of Ivanhoe Commandery 4, Knights of Templar; past watchman of Shepherds of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem; and a member of Destiny Lodge 197 F&AM; the Royal Arch Masons, and White Clover Chapter, Order of Eastern Star.
Surviving are his wife Rosemary; a son George J. of Tacoma; two daughters, Mrs. Naomi Fjermedal, of Tacoma, and Mrs. T. J. (Rosemary) Gianelli of Tillamook, Ore.; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild."

Mrs. Mansfield died of heart problems Tuesday in a Portland
hospital. She was 94.
Born Jan. 11, 1896, in Union, she was a descendant of members of
the Royal family, who were early Portland pioneers. Her maiden
name was Skipworth. She married Lorenzo Mansfield on May 5, 1920.
Mrs. Mansfield was a homemaker. She was a member of St.
Mark's Episcopal Church. Her husband died in 1969.
She is survived by her daughters, Naomi E. Hanley of Tacoma and
Rosemary Skipworth Gianelli of Portland; son, George J. of Seattle; 15
grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests remembrances be contributions to St. Mark's

- Born in Spokane, Washington, February 3, 1958, to parents Ruth and
Craig Marlette, Keith was called home December 12, 2005 in Salem,
Oregon. 
Keith graduated from McNary High School in 1976. He attended Chemeketa
Community College in Salem and attained an Associate Degree in
Insurance Technology. Keith became medically disabled with
uncontrollable epileptic seizures and was unable to pursue his
professional career.
Following his major surgeries, Keith spent his time as a companion and
helpmate to his mother and father. He excelled at landscaping,
housekeeping and was always a willing partner in family activities.
Walking with his Dad, crossword puzzles, Pinochle and Solitaire were
some of his favorite pastimes.
Keith had a special gift, of friendship and willingness to help those
in need for every stranger he met. His smile and blue eyes were always
there for all to enjoy. He will be sorely missed by his family and his
many friends.
Keith had been a member of the Keizer Elks Lodge and was a member of
Jason Lee Methodist Church. As a youth, he had been involved in Cub
Scouts and later in Boy Scouts. Keith was an avid water skier and an
excellent swimmer. He enjoyed deer and elk hunting with his father for
many years.
Keith’s family will miss him and we only wish him a happy journey on
the final trip home. We know that Jesus must have a Christmas
celebration in Heaven, as Christmas was Keith’s happiest time of year.
Keith leaves a son, Christopher, who is a student at McKay High School.
He also leaves a brother, Jay Marlette of Keizer; a sister, Diana
Anning of Keizer and a sister, Robin Bassett of Lacy, Wash., along with
their respective spouses, Penny Marlette, Bill Anning and Tom Bassett.
Keith’s brother, Ron Marlette preceded him in death ten years ago.
Ron’s widow, Sue and niece, Katie reside in Vancouver, Wash. Keith had
many other nieces and nephews as well: Jill Anning, Aaron Anning, Jeana
Eastman, Josh and James Marlette. Extended family surviving Keith are
uncles and aunts, Harley and Ida Lyons of Clarkston, Wash., Ron and
Marlene Carpani of Coos Bay, Bob and Ruth Hinch of Prospect, Pat Lyons
of North Bend and Dave Anderson of Portland. Special prayers come from
his uncle and aunt, Vernon and Gerri Holden of Moses Lake, Wash.
The family’s prayers will travel with Keith throughout his heavenly
journey as we know that Keith now lives in the house of Our Lord, that
house not having been built by human hands.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Fri., Dec. 16 at Jason Lee

Born in Sharon, Ohio, February 19, 1881, Marquis served for
eleven years with the United States army. He resided in Ohio and
Kansas before coming to Oregon 30 years ago.

1935. He graduated from Willamette University in 1940 and earned
a bachelor of divinity degree from Garrett Theological Seminary and a
master's degree from Northwestern University in 1943.
He married Luella May Pike in June of 1941.
He served pastorates in Junction City, Lebanon, Portland, Forest
Grove and Springfield. From 1974 to 1980 he was superintendent of
the Western District, United Methodist Church.
He was chosen representative to the Methodist General Conference
in 1956 and 1960, and was chairman of the Board of Pensions for the
Oregon-Idaho Conference of the United Methodist Church for a number of
years.
He moved to Milwaukie in 1989.
Survivors include his wife; son, Mark Allen; daughter, Mary Beth
Slabaugh; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

"A Life Of Service--Luella May Pike was born December 13, 1911
in Fremont, Iowa, the third of Stella and Vernon Pike's six children. Rev.
Pike was a Methodist preacher. Luella grew up in the church whose mission
became her life's work.
Rev. Pike made sure that all his children got a
college education. It being the Depression, Luella's tuition at Iowa
Wesleyan College was paid by donating a cow to the college president.
After graduation she taught home economics
in several Iowa high schools.
In the summer of 1939, she and three other young teachers toured the western
United States in an epic 8000 mile car trip. That fall she enrolled in
Garrett Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, to earn
her certificate
in Christian Education.
In 1941 she married a ministerial
student, Carl Mason, and set her life on a new course. Together they moved
to Carl's native Oregon to serve pastorates in Junction City, Lebanon, Portland,
Forest Grove and Springfield. Daughter
Mary and son Mark were born
during the years in Junction City. Luella was a full partner in the work
of the United Methodist Church and especially enjoyed her work with youth groups
and the Women's Society.
Luella and Carl retired in 1980 and
moved to Rose Villa in 1989. Rose Villa provided a caring community after
Carl's death in 1994, and the support that allowed Luella to live independently
until she enter the Health Center in 2004.
A lifelong advocate
for social justice, Luella gave time, energy, and resources to many causes.
She was open-minded and adventuresome, always ready to try something new--river
rafting in Alaska with Carl after retirement, water-color
painting in her
late 80's. She delighted in her five grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren. Summer camping with family in the Cascades and the
San Juan Islands were time to enjoy nature. At 89 she went tent camping on
the Oregon
coast with some of her great grandchildren. An avid gardener
wherever she lived, she enjoyed cutting flowers in her Rose Villa garden plot
until 2006.
Luella's family and friends will remember the strong
woman who always had a smile, who lived her faith and her principles every day,
who loved unconditionally."

"Body of Lonely Woman is Found---Eulalie Mathey, Aged Spinster,
Believed to Have Been Long Dead---Chairs and Bedding Scattered About
House Point to Sudden Convulsive Attack---Foul Play is Not Suspected by
Coroner---Not having seen a light in her house for several days,
neighbors of Miss Eulalie Mathey, an aged spinster, investigated the
rooms yesterday and found her lying lifeless near the kitchen stove.
Apparently she had been dead for a number of days. She was 75
years old and lived near Twelfth and Market streets.
Miss Mathey had been accustomed to go to the house of neighbors
for water and as she had not been seen since last Friday afternoon, a
search was made yesterday.
A niece, Mrs. A.L. Marchand of 1405 North Summer street, was
called about 1 o'clock yesterday and with the neighbors entered the
house. Miss Mathey was known to be a scrupulously clean
housekeeper, but chairs and bed clothing scattered about the room
indicated that the woman had died in a convulsion of some sort,
although she was not known to be subject to attacks of this
nature. Foul play is not suspected. The body was found near
the front of the stove.
Coroner Clough was called and death was pronounced due to old
age.
As the body was being taken from the house an attendant with
Coroner Clough stepped upon the board covering of an old well, which
gave way, and he escaped falling into the well only by holding firmly
to the handles of the basket containing the corpse.
The dead woman came to Salem from Switzerland about seventeen
years ago. She has lived alone in a comfortable four-room house
near the Southern Pacific depot and had saved money from fruit and
garden produce. Her home was furnished to her by her nieces and
nephews in this city, who also brought her food, and furnished her with
a yearly allowance.
Two weeks ago she called on the Marchand family as was her usual
custom, to procure French papers. She was complaining at that
time. She was generally considered a recluse and was not often
seen by her relatives and neighbors.
The aged woman is survived by a brother, Mathew Mathey, and two
nieces and two nephews, all of Salem. The latter are Mrs. C.L.
Marchand, Mrs. Henry Jacquet, Ed Mathey of the Orenco nursery, and
Walter Mathey, who lives on the Portland road, two miles east of Salem.
The funeral will be held today at 1 o'clock from the chapel of
Webb & Clough. Burial will be in Lee Mission cemetery."

"Salem Boy Is Killed In Crash With Train--Maynard Maw, 12, Is
Fatally Injured Sunday--Light Car Driven by Brother Is Wrecked by OE
Near Highland Station--Maynard Maw, 12, who lived with his parents at
2135 North Fourth, was injured fatally Sunday noon when the Ford `bug'
in which he was riding, collided with a Portland bound Oregon Electric
train at the North Fifth street crossing near the Highland
school. His brother, Russell, 17, was driving the car, and was
injured about the right arm and hip. As he was driving the car
the steering wheel saved him from being thrown through the windshield
and onto the curb.
Maynard was jolted through the windshield and struck the curb
with his head, in front of the Fred F. Peters' home, into which he was
taken rapidly losing consciousness. As soon as possible he was
rushed to the Salem hospital, but died at 4 o'clock. The auto was
tossed nearly 50 feet into a clump of rose bushes along the curb.
It is said that there were several waiting at the Highland depot
to take the train, and they had signalled for the train to stop.

Salem friends of the deceased said Maw received severe head
injuries when his car overturned on a highway curve just east of

Nothing For Forty-Five Days Passes Away--Yesterday morning at 11:30
o'clock, Harvey F. McAdams, who has broken all previously known records
by fasting forty-five days, passed to his eternal rest. While the
aged man's fast was not a voluntary one, it was none the less
interesting, showing as it did the wonderful tenacity with which he
clung to life. The illness, which preceded the long fast, began
last Thanksgiving day, when gangrene manifested itself upon one of his
toes that had previously been bruised. A surgical operation did
not check the ravages of the malady, but it was only when his system
became thoroughly filled with the disease, that the remarkable phase of
it presented itself in his aversion to food. For forty five days
he has eaten no food and from a medium-sized man wasted to a veritable
skeleton, having lost at least seventy-five pounds in weight during his
fast.
He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, seventy-nine years ago, and
lived in several of the states before coming to Oregon a few years ago,
and engaging in farming in the vicinity of Salem. Besides his
son, at whose home he died, at 1298 North Commercial street, he leaves
a wife who was with during his illness.
The funeral will be held from the home at 1:30 this afternoon,
the Rev. W.H. Selleck conducting the services. Interment will be

"Mrs. McAfee of Quaker Church Dies--Mrs. Effie Lynch McAfee,
long active the world over in the Religious Society of Friends and
resident of Salem since 1949, died Saturday in a Salem hospital at the
age of 84.
Mrs. McAfee had been to Europe on 22 occasions on relief work
and lecture engagements. Born in Butterworth Station, Ohio in
1873, she was graduated from the University of Michigan in 1897.
She married James Renwick McAfee in 1905. He was a
building contractor in New York until his death in 1923. One of
her first positions after graduating from college was as principal of
a New York city high school.
After World War I she worked with relief organizations in Vienna
feeding starving children. She later assisted in relief work in
Palestine and Egypt.
In 1925 she accepted a teaching position at Hunters College in
New York where she remained for five years. Another six years
were devoted to helping refugees under the early Hitler rule.
After an extended tour of Asia, where she lectured and visited
with relief organizations, she returned to this country. Shortly
after World War II she visited in Salem with a daughter, Nancy
McAfee. Then in 1949 she moved here. She lived at 1185 24th
St. NE.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Edward Andrews, Portland,
and Mrs. Walter Beck, Toronto, Canada; one brother, Henry T. Danforth,
Kansas City, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews, including Dean Robert
Gregg of Willamette University.
Private services will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. in W.T. Rigdon chapel

28, 2023 at Willamette View Retirement Community in Portland, OR. He and his
wife Velma lived there since 2002. He was 94 years old.

will be held at First United Methodist Church in Portland on January 20, 2024 at
11:00 AM.
Born in Monte Vista, CO on December 3, 1928, to Roy, Sr. and Leota,
he was the youngest of five siblings. Raised on the family farm, he attended the
Sargent Consolidated School all twelve years. In his own words, he "couldn't get
off the farm fast enough," an ambition which led to degrees from the University
of Denver and the Iliff School of Theology, later culminating in a Masters in
Sacred Theology from Andover Newton Theological School in 1967. He first served
in Williams, CA and then as minister to youth at First United Methodist Church
in Palo Alto, and as Director of the Wesley Foundation at Stanford University.
He later served as University Chaplain and Assistant Professor of Religion at
Willamette University, before returning to his home conference in 1968 to be
Senior Pastor at Christ United Methodist Church in Denver. He went on to be
Senior Pastor at First United Methodist Church in Boulder in 1972, and then
again at First United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs in 1979. Bishop
McConnell was elected to the episcopacy in 1980 by the Western Jurisdiction and
was assigned to the Portland area. He served eight years there before being
assigned to the Seattle area in 1988. He retired from the episcopacy in 1996
Bishop Cal loved his life in the church and he leaves a legacy of faith,
compassion, and advocacy for social justice. He was an insightful and
compassionate leader, an engaging speaker, and a friend and mentor to many. For
34 years he was married to Dr. Mary McConnell who died in 1986; they had two
sons, David McConnell and Mark McConnell. Cal and Velma Duell were married in
1988 and have between them six sons, their spouses, eight grandchildren, and two
great-grandchildren. Bishop McConnell is survived by his wife Velma, their sons,
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his brother, Taylor McConnell.

In December 1988, Velma married Bishop Calvin McConnell and moved to Seattle,
Washington, where he was serving as the episcopal leader of the Pacific
Northwest Annual Conference. In 1996, Velma received the Ruth Award from the
clergy women of PNW in gratitude for her support of women in ministry.
Upon
Bishop Cal's retirement in 1996, he and Velma returned to Portland, Oregon where
she continued to be active in her local church and on various committees at the
Willamette View Retirement Community where they moved in 2002. Velma was
instrumental in forming the pastoral care team and was active in the
International Relations and Public Affairs Committee, League of Women Voters,
and frequently leading vespers services. Throughout these years Velma was an
active member of the Reconciling Ministries Network.
Velma Stuzman Duell
McConnell leaves an expansive legacy of hope, faith, love, and advocacy for
social justice. A leader in her own right, she was a mentor, fierce activist for
social justice and human rights, and a compassionate and insightful friend to
people all over the world.

six sons and their spouses, Barry Duell (Masako), Gary Duell (Marlene), Bart

and Money for Burial of Race Victim--Quiet and simple funeral services
were held for Francis St. Elmo McGrath, 14, from the Rigdon chapel at 4
o'clock yesterday afternoon. The services were in charge of Rev.
H.E. Pemberton and were attended by a great many sympathetic and

The lad was killed during the last auto race of the day at Lone
Oak track on Labor day, when he and a boy companion left the inside of
the course and attempted to cross to the other side. They failed
to see the speeding racing machines, which were partially obscured by
dust. His companion escaped uninjured.
Contributions left at the Spa yesterday toward paying the
funeral expense totaled $85.60, according to F.G. Myers, who counted
the money deposited at closing time last night. The total expense

pneumonia, William McMillan, of Pittsburg, Kansas.

pronounced case of pneumonia. He was taken from the train

"Good Man Gone--James Nelson Medbury, Who Died on Sunday At His
Home.--He Was A Lineal Descendant of Roger Williams, Founder of Rhode
Island--Had Been a California Miner and a Coast Resident for
Fifty-three Years.--James Nelson Medbury, who died at his home on the
Garden Road on Sunday morning last, was aged 76 years.
He was a lineal descendant of Roger Williams, the founder of
Rhode Island. He was born at East Providence, Rhode Island, known
at that time as Sekonk, Mass. The boundary line between the two
states was not settled until 1863.
The home of young Medbury was broken up when he was fifteen
years of age by the death of his mother. When he left home he
went to work for a tavern-keeper who tried to induce him to drink, but
he had taken a vow, and he was a total abstainer during his entire life.
He worked in Rhode Island until he was 21, when, with his next
younger brother, he went to California. He worked in the Middle
mines in Toullumne county, in that state, and discovered and developed
some rich claims. He was several times on the point of making a
large fortune in mining, but his trusting nature, gave the
opportunities which were his to others. He was fifty-three years
a resident of this coast, with the exception of one year. He
remained in California until eighteen years ago when he returned to his
old home at East Providence, Rhode Island, remaining there a year,
after which he came to Oregon and brought the Ogle place on the Garden
Road, just east of Salem and in the suburbs of this city. It is a
part of the Gilbert donation claim.
The deceased was a confiding, generous man. He had always
taken a great interest in politics. He cast his first vote, for
the `Knownothing'- candidate for president, his second for John C.
Freemont, his third for Abraham Lincoln and his last for Theodore
Roosevelt.
Mr. Medbury was upright and honest and a good neighbor, as is
testified to by all who knew him well.
He leaves one brother, Daniel, two years his senior, in Rhode
Island; one sister, two years younger, Miss Phebe R. Medbury, at the
home place on the Garden Road, and another brother, Rev. A.R. Medbury
whose home is in Jenkintown, one of the most beautiful suburbs of
Philadelphia, Pa. Rev. Medbury has been at the home place on the
Garden Road for a year and a half in order to be with his brother in
his last sickness. After the business of the estate is settled up

"Menzies--James Menzies was born in Pertle, Scotland, July 25,
1820, and died at his home in Salem, Sept. 14, 1883, of pneumonia,
after an illness of six days.
In early life, after his father's death, he removed with his
mother to London, where she was married to an officer in the English
army, and from thence he accompanied them to Dublin, Ireland, and
afterwards to India. There he apprenticed himself to a gunsmith,
but becoming dissatisfied through the intemperence of his master he
joined himself to a ship and went to sea. Among his shipmates he
early distinguished himself, and while yet an apprentice he was made
second mate of the vessel. Having served out his time, he was
offered and accepted the command of a ship engaged in the trade between
Europe and the Islands of the Pacific. Later he became the owner
of a vessel, which was wrecked about thirty years ago on the Pacific
coast. This loss practically ended his seafaring life.
Hence forth he was first a pilot on the Columbia river, and then a
farmer of the time on Sauvies Island and latterly on the Sandy, from
whence he removed a few months ago to Salem, to live a retired live and
educate his children.
He was married twice. The first time to Miss P.E. Miller,
Feb. 5, 1849, and to Mrs. L.O. Crosby, May 11, 1863. To him were
born eleven children, nine of whom and his last wife are still
living. He was affectionate as a husband, tender as a
father. His home was the center of the world in which he
lived. Love of home more than anything else removed him from the
sea. Here his departure is deeply, painfully felt.
Capt. Menzies was converted about fifteen years ago in a little
school house on the Sandy, and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church,
after which he remained a member until the heavens received him out of
our sight. He at once became a trustee and a steward, took an
active part in building the church at Fairview, on the Powell's Valley
Circuit, and acted several years as Sunday school superintendent
there. In his work for the church and Christ he looked back with
unmixed pleasure and satisfaction. He had some of the habits
common among men of the sea, but by the grace of God he brought them
under the legal power of his will and cast them out. The new
impulses which arose in his soul at his conversion, were allowed to
flow forth and crystalize in his active life. His motto was: `Do
justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with thy God.'
The last few weeks of his life were spent in superintending the
building of a new house at Salem, but being full of years and having
done his work God called him up higher; and his pure spirit passed into
a better and more abiding house, the house which hath foundations,
whose maker and builder is God.
After appropriate services at his late residence his remains
were laid to rest in `Lee Mission Cemetery' to await the resurrection

She enjoyed looking after children and took in any child who
needed a place to stay or something to eat. She also enjoyed
making baked goods.

Pendleton; sons, Verne of Reedley, Calif., and William of Salem; 34

"Man, 89, Dies Trying To Protect Daughter--Salem Father Beaten
by Son-in-Law, But Death is Laid to Natural Causes; Younger Man Put in
State Hospital--An 89-year-old Salem man died Saturday after he
intervened to protect a daughter from an assault by her husband, who
threathened to kill her. (Pictures)
The elderly man, William M. Miller, suffered head injuries
apparently inflicted by a cane in the 11:30 a.m. episode at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Daniel G. Keidatz, 3797 June Ave. NE.
But Miller, who died moments later in the front yard, probably
succumbed from natural causes hastened by the ordeal, the Marion County
coroner's office said. He was known to have a weak heart.
Ex-Mental Patient
Held after the incident was his son-in-law, Daniel Keidatz, 40,
described by his doctor as a former mental patient. Taken into
custody on a nearby street afterward, Keidatz was placed in the State
Hospital for examination.
A post-mortem was held on the dead man but results awaited
further tests.
The incident that threw the quiet Northeast Salem neighborhood
into turmoil, exploded unexpectedly at the modest Keidatz home.
Mrs. Helene Keidatz, 35, told State Cpl. Robert Haines and
District Attorney Hattie Kremen that her husband came down from bed and
began beating her while she was in a phone conversation with the family
doctor.
`Threatened to Kill Me'
`He threatened to kill me.' Mrs. Keidatz related.
Hearing the commotion, the woman's frail father, who lived with
the family, came to the scene and urged her `to run.' Miller then
struck Keidatz across the face with a heavy cane he carried.
Accounts indicated that Keidatz then grabbed the cane away from
his father-in-law. Keidatz, who had a badly swollen cheek from
the blow he took, later told police he didn't remember hitting the
elderly man with the walking stick.
Mrs. Keidatz sustained bruises on abdomen and legs before her

He was born in Buffalo Lake, Minn., and lived in Minnesota
before coming to Salem. He owned and operated Millett's Grocery
Store in the Four Corners area in the 1940s and early 1950s. He
later worked as a mail carrier for 25 years. He was a member of
the First Evangelical Church of North America and the National Letter
Carriers Association.

Janet Leek of Corvallis; and sister Sana DeLapp of Salem.

“Bruce Harold Morace (77) passed away on February
23, 2018, surrounded by family, and consumed by cancer that spread all too
quickly. Bruce truly loved his family, both biological and any friend of Bill
W., and served as a great role model of giving, acceptance, forgiveness,
gratitude, and sharing.
He was born in New Orleans, but grew up in
California, where he ran track in high school and was proud of running in the
Los Angeles Invitational in the Los Angeles Coliseum. While in California, he
married his first wife, Bonnie Tehan, in 1963 and they had four kids. They
eventually moved to Oregon, Grants Pass and then Salem, and were divorced in
1984. In 1989, he married Vicki Curry and the family grew to include her 6 kids.
Bruce worked as a machinist in the shipyards from 1959 to 1993 and continued to
use his building talents as a residential contractor after he retired.
Bruce is known for always being there, wherever he
was needed, and we're sure that will continue as he lives on in our hearts and
memories. He believed in paying it forward and never met a stranger. In Bruce's
memory and to help us all to accept this loss, let us all remember the words
that were so important to him: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I
cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the
difference.
Bruce is survived by wife Vicki Morace; children
Belinda (Dave) Fair, Brian (Suzanne) Morace, Bernice (Dean) Breitbach, and Brent
(Jennifer) Morace; stepchildren Bill (Katzi) Herrin, Rick (Nancy) Herrin, Mark
(Amy), Sharmon (Stephan) Wright, and Marietta (Steffen) Larsen; sisters Linda
(Gary) Moore and Susie (Leo) Stott; and all their families, including 17
grandkids and 7 great-grandkids. He was preceded in death by brothers Jimmy
Morace and Bobby Morace and stepson George Cook.
There will be a memorial service to honor Bruce on
Friday, March 2, at 2 pm, at Saint Timothy's Episcopal Church at 3295 Ladd Ave
NE, Salem. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider giving

various organizations. A reading, "The Perfect Tribute," was
aired annually by a radio station on Lincoln's Birthday.
She lived on 2244 Hyde St. SE until 1956, when she moved to a
nursing home. She fell this fall fracturing a hip, and her health

86, a resident of the Salem area for 60 years, died Friday at her home
on Salem route 1. She would have cele-brated her 65th wedding
anniversary on October 5.
Mrs. Moyer, with her widower, James W.A. Moyer, came to Oregon,
with two of their five children, in 1891, settling on a fruit farm on
Wallace road in West Salem. The family lived at that residence
for many years.
She was born in Genesee, Ill., Sept. 19, 1864, the daughter of
Martin and Paulina Bartell. In 1866, when she was 2 years old,
she moved to South Dakota, where she married Moyer in Clark, Oct. 5,
1886.
Besides her widower, she is survived by daughters, Mrs. Mable
Cooper and Mrs. Jessie Forrest, both of Salem; sons, Martin Moyer,
Springfield, James Moyer and Lealand Moyer, both of Salem, and seven
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Marie Mueller, 66, of Salem, OR passed away on July 12th, 2017.
Regina was born in Williamsport,
Pennsylvania to Raymond & Claire Kohler on August 3rd, 1950. She married Conrad
Mueller in East Lansing, Michigan in 1970. She graduated from
Michigan State Universitywith a degree in
Mathematics. She worked as a computer programmer for the City of Salem for 2
years. Regina then raised and homeschooled all eight of her children, and
mentored other homeschooling families.
Throughout her life,
Regina was an active community member and leader. She was a Lector, Eucharistic
Minister, and Religious Education teacher at St. Joseph Church, an active
supporter of Right to Life and St. Vincent de Paul, and involved with La Leche
League, Boy Scouts and MathCounts among many other activities. Her hobbies
included hiking, camping, reading, brainteasers, puzzles, moving furniture, and
playing cards. She gave freely of herself and her time, and she will be greatly
missed.
Regina is preceded in death by her mother, Claire.
Regina is survived by her husband, Conrad; her 4 daughters, Amanda, Kirstin,
Solveig, & Wendelin; her 4 sons, Georg, Hans, Manfred & Dieter; her father,
Raymond; her 4 sisters, Roxanna, Karen, Norma & LuAnn; her 2 brothers, Gregory &
Raymond; and her 8 grandchildren.

Mulvihill, an engineer for the Portland Gas & Coke company,
had many friends and relatives about Salem. Cancer was the cause
of his death. Surviving are his widow, Ruby Mulvihill, and a
daughter, Ruby Harriett, of Portland; a sister, Mrs. Mary Dibble of
Molalla and a brother, Orville, of Woodbury, N.J.

"Mumm--Christina Heinke Mumm, wife of John Mumm, was born May 1,
1844, in Dorfe Talk, Landschaft Angeln, Pro-vince of Schleswig Holstein
Germany. In 1870, the year of her marriage to John Mumm, she came
to this country, locating in Minnesota, where they lived until the year
1890 when they came to Oregon. Mother Mumm was converted under
the labor of the Evangelical ministers and became a member of the
church, proving faithful to the end. She has been a sufferer for
more than ten years, the last six years she was bed-fast, but in all
she was patient and submissive to the will of God.
The deceased was a loving wife and an affectionate mother in the
home of twelve children--five boys and seven girls, of which two girls
and one boy preceded the mother to the better land.
She died February 5, 1909, near Salem, Oregon, at the age of 64
years, 9 months and 4 days leaving to mourn her departure her husband
and 9 children, three brothers, three sisters and a large number of
friends.
Funeral services will be held tomor-row, Monday, at 10 o'clock
from the house, and at 11:30 in the German Evangelical church, corner
Center and Liberty streets.
