"SALEM - Alice Dahlen, age 92, passed away July 13, 2006 in Keizer, Oregon. She was born in Dooley, Montana December 23, 1913. Alice graduated from Salem High School in 1933. She attended Willamette and Portland State Universities. She worked as an insurance broker at Huggins Insurance and Updegraff Insurance. She was the first woman in Oregon to receive the CPCU designation. She was active in the Salem Insurance Womens Organization.She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where she was active in the quilting group.Alice is survived by her sister, Irene Rivers of Gladstone, Ore.; sister-in-law, Lois Dahlen of Eugene, Ore.; 4 nieces, 3 nephews and several great nieces and nephews.Visiting will be Sunday, July 16th 1-4 p.m., at Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors. He was born in Spirit Lake, Alberta. He was raised in
Salem and graduated from high school there. He was assistant parks and
recreation director in Eugene.
He is survived by his wife, Lois; daughters, Kristen Skivington,
Lansing, Mich., Julie Dahlen, Africa, and Jill Dahlen, Scottsdale,
Ariz; son, Tom, Astoria; and sisters, Alice Dahlen, Salem, and Irene
Rivers, Gladstone.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Lee Mission
Cemetery under the direction of Howell-Edwards-Doerksen mortuary." SJ

Rivers, Gladstone; son Alvin K., Astoria; brothers Fred Schultz,
Perham, Minn., William and David Schultz, both Dent, Minn., and Oswald
and Adolph Schultz, both Ottertail, Minn.; eight grand-children and two
great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Howell-Edwards mortuary,

"Girl Dies Despite Race With Oxygen--Despite efforts of local
firemen and state police Saturday night to save the life of Phyllis
Dahlen, 3, of this city, the child died Sunday morning of pneumonia.
Oxygen was brought here from Multnomah county through the use of
radio and police aid in a vain effort to turn back the threat of
death. Salem firemen were first called upon but did not have the
necessary supply of oxygen.
She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ole C. Dahlen;
three brothers, Victor, Walter and Alvin; two sisters, Alice and Irene
Dahlen.
Funeral services will be held from the chapel of W.T. Rigdon and
Son, Wednesday, at 1:30 p.m., with Rev. W.H. Gross officiating.

"Death Takes Charles Davis, Retired Dentist--Dr. Charles Ward
Davis, 56, long in the practice of dentistry in this city, died at a
Salem convales-cent home Friday after a lengthy illness.
Born at Greenleaf, Kans., Dec. 29, 1897, he came to Oregon with
his parents in 1908. Most of his life was spent in the Salem
area, though he practiced dentistry for a time at Stayton. He
practiced continuously in Salem from 1927 to about a year ago, when he
was forced to retire because of ill health.
Dr. Davis married Christena Marie Richardson in 1926 at Central
Point.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge, Al Kader Temple, Amaranth
Cherry Court and the American Legion, Capital Post No. 9.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Christena Davis, Salem; a
daughter, June Elaine Hooker, Portland; a son, Monte G. Davis of
California; brothers, W.E. Davis, Sandy, and Don L. Davis, Modesto,
Calif.; sisters, Mrs. Mary Aurora Champ, Salem, and Mrs. Ethel D.
Soderholm, Washougal, Wash.; three grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at
Clough-Barrick chapel. Interment will follow at Lee Mission

He was born in Salem and graduated from Salem High School in
1947. He was an Army veteran, and he was an aeronautical
engineer, most recently for McDonnell-Douglas. He enjoyed flying
and owned his own plane.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine M.; daughter, Susan Harper
of Laguna Beach, Calif., sons, Mark of Dana Point, Calif., and Kirk of
Laguna Beach; mother, "Chrissie" Martinson of Brooks; and sister, June
Hooker of Salem.
Services were held in Laguna Hills. Private interment will
be in Lee Mission Cemetery, Salem. Contribu-tions may be made to

illness of several months from cancer of the stomach, A.E. Day passed
away at his home on East center street at 2:30 Tuesday morning.
Mr. Day was born in Virginia June 23, 1854. Later he moved
to Ohio and then to Missouri where he was married to Narcissus
Black. He had been a resident of Salem for 30 years.
Deceased leaves his wife and the following children to mourn his
death: Guy, Glenn, Kenneth, Beryl, all of Portland, and Hattie Day and
Mrs. Irwin Wroten, of Salem. All were at the bedside except one
son, Glenn, who is in France.
The services will be held at Webb & Clough chapel at 2:30 today by N.

Fred, Harmon and William DeVries of Salem, died yesterday morning in
Portland. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 o'clock Tuesday
morning from the Rigdon mortuary.
Mrs. DeVries was born in East Friesland, Germany, December 17,
1847, and in the spring of 1877 was married to Hermann DeVries, who
died in November, 1920. Before her marriage she joined the
Methodist church in Germany. With her family, she came to this
county in 1885, settling at Macon, Nebr., where she courageously
endured the hardships of pioneer life and with her husband and children
helped to lay the found-ation of what is now a very progres-sive church
in Macon. The family came to Oregon in 1902, and has lived eight
miles east of Salem for 26 years. She lived with her daughters in
Portland the past two years.
Besides the three sons already mentioned, she leaves the
following children; Mrs. Anna Grusing of LaKin, Kansas, and Mrs. Tena
Fischer and Mrs. Theda Brunkow of Portland. Another son died in

He was born in Vergas, Minn., and trained for the Lutheran
ministry at Concordia College in St. Paul, Minn., and Concordia
Seminary in St. Louis, Mo.
In 1939, he married Edna K. Witte in Salt Lake City.
He served Lutheran parishes in Aberdeen, Ashton and Weiser,
Idaho; Sandy, Klamath Falls and Stayton. He was a counselor in
three church circuits during 16 years and served on the board of
directors for the North-west District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri
Synod.
He retired from the ministry on Jan. 29, 1978. He moved to
Salem with his wife in February that year.
Survivors include his wife; daugh-ters, Elisabeth Wheeler of
Tucson, Ariz., and Carolyn Pugmire of Salem; sons, Norbert of Newberg,
Jonathan of Bloomington, Ill., and Thomas of Los Alamos, N.M.; two
sisters; and eight grandchildren.
Visiting will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday in Virgil T. Golden
mortuary. Memorial services will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday in

"Auto Mishaps Kill Boy and Man in Valley Area--Fifteen-year-old
Arthur J. Dickman jr., 4035 Gary st., died at a local hospital Monday
morning of injuries incurred earlier when the car in which he was a
passenger overturned on a curve south of Liberty.
Gene Van Pellacher, 121 Williams ave., was in Salem General
hospital with a fractured skull. His condition was described by
hospital officials as "fair". Daniel Bouge, 20, 4115 Batting st., driver of the car, William
Harris, 22, and Andrew Huggins, 24, 284 N. Commercial st., were
uninjured. State police said the car apparently failed to make a curve and
tipped over shortly after midnight Sunday. Dick-man died at the
hospital about 7:30 a.m. Monday morning.

Oregon, where he retired. Our father was 100% family man and he raised us to be
the same. Many, many people loved Paul and his love of life and his love of
family and he will be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his
wife, Louise Dietz; sister, Olive Applebee; and brother, Donald Dietz. He is
survived by his brother, Howard Dietz of Smith Center, Kan.; daughter; Cheryl
Dunn of Tualatin, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Don Barnes of Salem,

Isaac Dillon, D.D. Brother James Frankland, county clerk of San
Juan County, and for many years an influential man in Puget Sound
Methodism, came to me yesterday bringing the sad news. Saturday
morning, June 7th, he learned that a boat with the overcoat, umbrella,
etc., of Dr. Dillon had been found afloat on the Sound, and he started
out on a launch to investigate. He could get no trace of the
Doctor, but learned that he left Port Stanley on the afternoon of
Friday to go to Newhall, on Orcas Island. About 3 o'clock
Saturday morning the boat was sighted and was soon recovered.
Under all the circumstances we can but conclude that in some way we
shall never know, the body of this eminent servant of God found a grave
in the waters of Puget Sound, in the evening of June 6th, while his
devout and pure spirit ascended to enter upon rest that remaineth for
the people of God. In his pastoral, district, education-al, and
editorial work he made a deep impression in his fifty years of
residence on this Northwest Coast. We who were near him knew that
he had been in failing health for some months.
In the early part of this Conference year he served Nooksack,
but after an attack of grippe, from which he did not fully recover, he
resigned his charge.
It was a benediction to know him, and his memory will be as

"Mrs. Dillon's Burial--Rev. Dr. Dillon, with his daughter, Mrs.
Edith Kellogg, accompanied by Rev. W.S. Harrington, their pastor, and
his wife and Mrs. Rev. L.J. Powell, with the body of Mrs. Dillon in
charge, arri-ved in Portland at five P.M. Tuesday on their way to Salem
to deposit the mortal remains of Mrs. Dillon in Lee Mission
Cemetery. They were met at the wharf by Rev. G.W. Izer and his
wife, Rev. T.L. Sails of East Portland, Rev. A. Atwood, Rev. W.B.
Osborne, and Rev. H.K. Hines, fellow workers with Dr. Dillon in the
ministry, and by several laymen, who had shared the pastoral care of
Brother Dillon and the personal friendship of his wife. The
funeral party immediately crossed to East Portland where they remained
for the night, and took the morning train for Salem where the funeral
obsequies were performed in the afternoon. They were under the
charge of Rev. J.N. Denison pastor of the M.E. Church in that city, and
Rev. W.S. Harrington of Seattle. The Editor of the Advocate
accompanied the party to Salem to participate in the mournful
services. We write before the exercises, and so cannot give an

"Steven Douglas Divel was born on November 15, 1955, in Salem, Oregon to
Wendell Divel and Ruth (Trogdon) Divel. He attended North Salem High School and
during that time would participate in Argonauts- Drum and Bugle Corps. Steven
always had a passion and talent for music. After high school he joined the
United States Navy and the tail end of the Vietnam War. After an honorable
discharge he would spend many years as a self-employed musician who would travel
with his bands around Canada, Oregon, Wyoming, and Nevada. Over the years he
would play in bands that covered blues, country, and some classic rock. He was
also a member of the Keizer Eagles Lodge and spending even his free time playing
his guitar. It was not uncommon that if Steven walked into a music store, before
leaving, he would tinker with different instruments and have a tune developed.
On April 2, 2022, Steven passed away at his home in Corvallis, Oregon at age 66.
He was predeceased by his both of his parents and his brother, Alan Divel. He is
survived by his sister, Jeanette Carlson; nieces, Felicity Brown and Angela
Brown; in addition to 1 great niece and 1 great nephew. Steven will always be
remembered for his love of music and fun-loving nature. A celebration of his
life will be held at Court Street Christian Church on April 23, 2022 at 2pm.

"Mrs. Anna S. Driver--Consort of Rev. I.D. Driver, was born in
Fulton, New York, April 21, 1839, and died of inflammation of the
stomach, near Salem, Oregon, May 21, 1873. Her mother died while
Anna was quite a girl. Her father was a Congregational
preacher. Her early advantages were good, and she became
possessed of a good education. She came to this State about seven
years ago, and was engaged for some time in teaching in the public
schools in Portland, after which she taught the colored school in that
city for one year. After a stay of four years, she returned to
Michigan, where two years ago she was united in marriage to her present
bereaved husband.
When fifteen years old, she was converted and united with the
Presbyterian Church, but after her arrival in Oregon she united by
letter with the Methodist Evangelical Church. On her return to
Michigan, she again connected herself with the Church of her early
choice, but after her marriage she removed her membership to the
Methodist Episcopal Church, where she remained until death.
Sister Driver was a systematic Christian. She had system
in her temporal affairs, and she served her Maker systematically.
In the Church she found much to do in visiting and instructing the
destitute. With all the means of spiritual culture found in the
Church, and with every depart-ment of Christian enterprise she was in
full sympathy. What she did was done in the name of the
Lord. She was a Christian. When death came she was ready to
depart and be with Christ.
Her last illness was of more than twenty days duration, and her
suffer-ings were intense, but she bore her affliction with Christian
resignation. Christ Jesus was her grand theme. A little
while before she died she said to them by her side, `Don't speak to
me.' She seemed desirous of being alone with Jesus, and closing her
hands she repeated His name, communing with Him amid the calm glory of
the evening twilight. Calmly and serenely she passed away.

moved with her parents to Portland and soon after they went to Eugene
where Miss Driver attended the public schools and the University of
Oregon. Later she graduated from the Kimball Theological school
of Salem and later was ordained by the Methodist church. She had
taught school and also had served in various pastorates in
Oregon. Miss Driver had been an active member of the WCTU and
various church organiz-ations. Surviving are two sisters, Miss
Lena Driver, Corvallis; Mrs. Frances E. Wolverton, Portland; three
brothers, Wiley A. Driver, Independ-ence; Paul S. Driver, Seattle;
Ralph A. Driver, San Jose, California; an aunt, Mrs. M.A. Kump, Eugene,
and several nieces and nephews.
Final rites are to be held in the Keeney funeral chapel at 1:30
Saturday afternoon. Dr. Thomas Yarnes of the Methodist church of
Forest Grove will officiate assisted by Dr. D.H. Leech of Albany.
Interment will follow in Jason Lee Memorial cemetery at Salem."

of Pneumonia and Influenza-J.W. Driver died at Dayton, Or., on
Wednesday, February 25, 1920, age 5 years, of pneumonia. "Jim" Driver,
the deceased, was born in Corvallis, Or. He lived in Salem and
Brownsville nearly all his life. The funeral services will be
held in the First Methodist church of Dayton today, February 27, and
burial will be in the Lee Mission cemetery at Salem, the funeral
cortege arriving here probably about 2 o'clock.
Deceased was a son of Rev. I.D. Driver, who passed to his reward
several years ago, and who was in his time one of the leading Methodist
ministers of this section. It was while he was pastor here that
the First Methodist church building of Salem was planned and erected."

"Died at the Occidental Hotel in Portland on the 6th inst., of
Hemmorage of the stomach, Mrs. Leanna Driver, wife of Rev. I.D. Driver,
Agent of the American Bible Society.
Mrs. Driver had accompanied her husband on a tour to Puget
Sound, and in returning from Victoria by sea, the rough weather brought
on sea-sickness so severe that it could not be con-troled; Gastritus
supervened and in spite of the most careful attention and skill, she
sunk into the arms of death, four days after reaching Port-land.
She died in peace, and though the messenger came unexpectedly, under
circumstances of deep affliction, she gave evidence of careful
preparation. There is reason to believe our sister had been a
praying person from child-hood, yet she did not make an open profession
of religion until January of the present year. Thus at the age of
26, leaving a beloved husband, with a family of seven children to be
cared for, and in the early stages of religious experience, at a
distance from home is this sister called away. Everything that
medical skill, careful attention, and Christian sympathy, could do to
save her was promptly done. The body was taken to the parsonage
of the Taylor St. Church, thence to her home at Salem, on Thursday,
buried on Friday with funeral services in the M.E. Church on the

Dr. I.D. Driver, prominent for many years as a Metho-dist minister in
Oregon, died of apoplexy at his farm home near Tangent at 10 o'clock
a.m. Monday, November 9. Mr. Driver had been a resident of this
neighborhood for the last 25 years, being actively engaged in
farming. He was born in Eugene May 14, 1880 and had spent all of
his life in this section of the state. He was never married and
is survived by the following brothers and sisters; Lee L. Driver,
Eugene; W.A. of Tangent; Paul S. of Portland; Ralph A. of San Jose,
Cal.; Miss Grace I., Miss Lena E. Driver of Tangent, and Mrs. Frances
Milton of Corvallis.
Funeral services will be held at the Fisher Braden Chapel in
Albany Thurs-day forenoon Nov. 12th beginning at 11 o'clock a.m.

"Death Takes David Dunne At Age of 79--David Dennis Dunne,
former Salem insurance salesman, died Monday evening at a Salem nursing
home at the age of 79 years.
He was born in Dublin, Ireland, March 8, 1874. For 10
years, from 1892 to 1902, he served in the British army and once was a
member of the famed Royal Irish Hussars.
In 1905 he sailed for Canada and later went to Spokane where he
worked as a circus wagon driver. This was the position he held
when he first came to Salem.
For a time in Salem, he worked as a printer's devil with The
Statesman and later was with the circulation depart-ment of the Capital
Journal.
Prior to entering the nursing home this summer, he made his home
at 1090 Norway St. His wife preceded him in death and is buried
at the Jason Lee Cemetery. He is survived by one sister, Miss
Mary Jane Dunne of Dublin, Ireland. Funeral services will be
